How to Avoid the Energy Drain

Have you ever been to a really exciting workshop or seminar before? I’ll bet that by the end of it you felt like you could take on the world and bring all of your greatest dreams to fruition instantly.  And probably, if you could have captured that energy and continued to have it at the same level in the future, you could do that.

But what happens in most cases? A few days or a couple of weeks later the great goals you set for yourself have faded back into the distance and real life has caught up with you again. You’re feeling frustrated and miserable because those workshop feelings were so great, you thought you could hold onto them forever.

So how can you keep your goals, and the energy it takes to fulfill them, alive? Here are a couple of good ideas:

1. A easy concept to remember is “Where focus goes, energy flows.” So if you want to keep you energy up, maintain your focus. You can do this by making your goals visible – hang them on your wall, post them on your bedroom mirror, or put them as your background on your computer screen. They can be words or pictures, whichever suits you most. The more often you see them the more you will remember and focus upon them.

2. Find people whose goals are like yours. Being around like-minded people means that not only will you see your goals (because they’re posted in front of you), you’ll also talk about them on a regular basis. You’ll start to see your goals from many angles and begin noticing opportunities around you that you didn’t take note of before. When you find people who are motivated to do more in life, you will find yourself also doing more and moving quickly toward where you want to go.

3. Find someone who has already accomplished a goal similar to yours and learn all you can about how they did it. Then just follow the same steps, and you’re certain to be headed in the right direction.

So attend those workshops, and go to those seminars. Give yourself an outstanding WowEnergy kind of boost, and then keep that energy flowing by holding your goals in plain view, spending time with like-minded people, and following someone who has already accomplished what you are setting out to do.

What can you do today?

But there’s nothing wrong with ME!

Someone says ‘lifecoach’ and you think ’shrink’. You say, “But there’s nothing wrong with me. Why do I need a lifecoach?”

Lifecoaching isn’t about having something wrong with you. As a matter of fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s about wanting A LOT to be right with you!

When you were young and you thought about what you wanted to be when you grew up, did you think about the life you’re living right now, or did you dream of much more? Have you already done everything you’ve always wanted to do in your life, and learned everything you always wanted to know, and been everything you wanted to become? If the answer to any one of these questions is ‘no’, then a lifecoach can help bring that dream to reality.

Lifecoaching is all about looking toward the future and making the most of what’s available to you. It’s about finding opportunities that you didn’t know existed, and allowing yourself to be brave enough to try something that you’ve never done before.

No one will delve into your past and dig up all of the skeletons in your closet. They won’t make you tell all of your secrets or do something you find morally or ethically wrong. They won’t tell you that you are a failure because of something that happened in your childhood, and they won’t tell you you’ve got some horrible problem that only a psychiatrist can help you with.

A lifecoach will ask you tough questions, though. She will make you think about some things you’ve done previously and find out how you may be holding yourself back from doing what you really want to do. She’ll keep you accountable for the personal and professional growth you want, and watch with you as it happens much faster than you ever expected. And she will push you to succeed in the ways you want so that you can’t keep putting off the things that matter most to you.

And coaching doesn’t have to go on for years. If you reach the goals you want in one month, then you’re finished. If you have high aspirations and want to do, be and have so much more, your coach will be available as long as you need her. But no matter what, the end result is that you remain in control, and you choose what works best for you to get the results you want.

Why do people fail?

Let me ask you a question: If you had your life to live over again, could you do more with it? Without even seeing you, I can tell that your answer most definitely is yes, in some, if not in many, ways.

Why is this? You make goals for yourself, right? You have your to do lists that you check off from time to time, so it looks like you’re making progress. So what are you doing wrong?

Let’s find out. Take a couple of minutes right now and write down 3 goals that are important to you. If you don’t have a pen and paper go get one, or open up your word processor if you prefer, and get started. It won’t take you long, but you’ll be amazed at what happens next.

Choose your goals from different areas of your life – personal, family, business/career, social contribution, spiritual, or finance are some ideas. Got them written down? Now kick them up a notch! Don’t ask yourself HOW you’ll do them, just stretch your goals from realistic to slightly unrealistic. That’s the difference.

You don’t fail because you set your goals too high and miss them – you fail because you aim too low and reach them! If your goals aren’t exciting enough they won’t motivate you, and if they don’t motivate you of course you won’t move forward in your life. So if you want success, go for the slightly unrealistic, the exciting, the inspirational.

Post your goals where you can see them every day, and if you’re a visual kind of person, post pictures of what they would look like as well. The more you can see and feel your aspirations, the more likely you are to get them. Your brain will seek out things in your life that match your thoughts, so make those thoughts great! You’ll find before you know it that things will fall into place for you.

The secret is to get started, so take that first step and make those goals exciting!

What’s on your face?

Your face reveals more about you than you might think. During your conversations with others, your microexpressions, brief facial expressions that last less than a quarter of a second, tell them what you’re really thinking and feeling, even if you are saying something else.

Here’s the good news: If your face is an open book, then other people’s features are, too. So how can you tell what someone is thinking and feeling about what you’re saying? Watch for these facial clues:

1. What are their eyebrows doing? An eyebrow raise happens very often when we first greet someone. Without being aware of it, we quickly raise and lower our eyebrows to signal that we are happy to meet the person in front of us. When we are meeting someone that we already know, this tells them that we are glad to see them again.

2. Where are their eyes looking? If they’re looking at you, you can be fairly sure that you’ve got the person’s attention and they’re interested in what you’re saying. If their eyes are looking down at the floor, chances are they are sad, depressed or feeling emotional. Eyes moving to the right or left briefly indicate the person is making personal connections to your conversation.

3. Which part of their face is telling you something? When people are afraid, you see it in their eyes. When they are happy, their cheeks, mouth and eyes let you know. Surprise shows up in the forehead, eyes and mouth, while anger is obvious in the whole face.

4. Who are you speaking to? Men and women use facial expressions differently. Women tend to smile and laugh more often than men, while men maintain a more serious look. Cultural influences sometimes play a role as well.

Not everyone can read microexpressions very well. As a matter of fact, up to 80% of the population has difficulty doing this. Where do you stand? Try this facial expressions test and find out.

What’s your leadership potential?

Leaders are people who stand out among others. They don’t have to be the wealthiest, or the most powerful, or even the smartest in their fields. Great leaders just have to be people that others look up to and consider trustworthy and knowledgeable. Leaders are those who look for success and happiness, not only for themselves, but for the people around them.

What leadership potential do you have? Here’s a quick quiz that will give you an idea about how great a leader you may be. Try it!
